Acute Care Surgeon

Overview: The Division of Acute Care Surgery at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine is seeking talented acute care surgeons to join our contemporary practice. Early-career, mid-career and senior faculty will enjoy a diverse clinical and academic practice in a supportive, collegial environment within a large and thriving academic medical center. Trauma, emergency surgery, critical care, elective surgery, endoscopy, robotics, teaching, research, outreach, global health and leadership are all available. The ideal candidate will be board certified or eligible in general surgery and surgical critical care and possess superior technical skills. The candidate for this position must be committed to excellence in clinical care, teaching, and scholarly activity. Strong communication skills and collaborative spirit are essential. Clinical Practice: UK Healthcare has been ranked Kentucky’s #1 Hospital by U.S. News and World Report for 8 years in a row. Our adult level I trauma center evaluates 4500 patients and admits more than 1000 with an injury severity score greater than 15. The group also evaluates over 2000 emergency surgery patients annually and performs over 500 elective surgical cases including complex abdominal wall reconstruction and robotic surgery. Elective practice is encouraged but is at the discretion of each faculty member. The successful candidate will join a thriving and expanding division of 10 faculty and 20 APP’s. The Division of Acute Care Surgery’s clinical footprint comprises 7 teams, staffed daily by 3 Chief Residents, Surgical Critical Care Fellows, 4 Junior Residents, 7 Interns and 7 APP’s. The referral area is a 100-mile radius and a population of over 1.2 million that includes a large rural and mountainous Appalachian expanse outside Lexington’s Metropolitan area (350,000). Two Surgical Critical Care Fellows, eight general surgery residents per year and medical students, PA students, a PA resident and nursing students make the Acute Care Surgery Service an active and rich educational environment.
Distribution of Effort: The ideal recruit will bring a commitment to becoming an educational leader or research interest and track record. Collaborators abound within the Acute Care Surgery Division, the Department of Surgery, the UK College of Medicine and the adjoining main campus. UK is an NIH Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences and an NCI-designated Cancer Center. Available time for research will be at least 1 week/month plus additional administrative time. Weekend duty is every third or less. Call duty is 4 nights every other month, with no 24-hour calls. Full time effort for an Acute Care Surgeon at the University of Kentucky is 173 ‘shifts’ annually. Additional shifts are paid as bonus. There is also a productivity bonus based upon RVU production.
