The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at University of Tennessee Health Science Center is either a one or two-year commitment. The first year is the same for both tracks, whereby the fellow has primary responsibilities in the trauma intensive care unit (TICU) at the Elvis Presley Trauma Center at Regional Medical Center. Each first-year fellow is on call twice per week. Responsibilities include assistance in caring for the critically ill and injured ICU patients, assisting the surgical residents in the operating room, and participating in resuscitations in the trauma admitting area. Presley Trauma Center is a self-contained unit with a dedicated nursing staff separate from the hospital’s emergency room. There are four trauma operating rooms in the trauma center that are dedicated for trauma/emergency surgery. Immediately adjacent to the trauma operating rooms is the 22 bed TICU. The fellows are responsible for organizing the weekly trauma conference and have independent responsibility for a minimum of two clinical prospective research studies. There are multiple opportunities for didactic learning, including a monthly multi-disciplinary trauma meeting, weekly trauma conference, morbidity and mortality conference, and attending teaching rounds. During the first year, fellows have the option to rotate for a period of one month each through our regional burn center at the Regional Medical Center and the pediatric intensive care unit at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital.

For those who commit to the two-year track, the second year of the fellowship allows the fellow to function as a junior attending (with protected academic time) to further develop clinical skills, and gain further operative, administrative, and research experience in preparation for a career as an academic surgeon. During that year, the fellow has the opportunity to complete research projects initiated during the first year of the fellowship, as well as participate in basic research. Our 2,200 square foot laboratory is equipped as an intensive care unit setting with separate stations for operative procedures. A gamma camera, HPLC, and flow cytometer are available for this laboratory.
