Grady Memorial Hospital is a tertiary care facility and the largest hospital in Georgia (953 beds). It is the only Level I Trauma Center in an eight county area with over 9 million people. Grady admits 50,000 patients per year. Of the 3,600 trauma patients, 35% have penetrating injuries. We also house a regional Burn Center, which provides comprehensive care for burn victims of all ages.
We offer a 2-year Trauma/Surgical Critical Care Fellowship to board-eligible surgeons (2 per year). Unlike most programs, the first year of the Fellowship is spent on the Trauma Service and involves operative trauma including acute general surgery. Comprehensive care of the injured patient is stressed, with fellows covering the resuscitation bay, operating room, clinic, and postoperative care. In addition to abdominal injuries, members of the Trauma Service manage all acute vascular and thoracic injuries. Elective cases include restoration of GI continuity and abdominal wall reconstruction. Biostatistics training is also available.
The second year is an ACGME-approved Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, with 9 months of ICU rotations. Electives available during both years include (but are not limited to) Burn ICU, MICU, Echocardiography, Interventional Radiology, and traveling rotations.
All nine faculty are certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery and have the certificate of added qualifications in Surgical Critical Care. Broad opportunities are available for clinical research. The Fellowship strongly supports attendance and presentations at national meetings. The fellows have excelled academically, with a 100% first time pass rate on the Surgical Critical Care board examination.
