Trauma Research Scholarship of the EAST Foundation

Following receipt of the Letters of Intent, the Research-Scholarship Section will judge the Letters of Intent on the basis of the merit of their research proposals, the potential of the applicant of future contributions to the science and practice of the surgery of trauma, and the applicant’s mentor support and dedication of the research proposal.  The top ranked Letters of Intent will be invited to submit full proposals by October 31, 2015.  The Research-Scholarship Section will review full proposals in November 2015 and select the final awardee.

Application Instructions and Terms

Applicant and Mentor Criteria:

  1. The intent of the EAST Foundation Trauma Research Scholarship is basic or applied trauma related research project of sufficient substance to have potential for further funding sources as initial studies are produced and published (e.g. basic science, clinical, epidemiology, injury prevention). The scholarship amount is $40,000 for one (1) year only.
  2. Applicants must be within five years of completion of their residency or fellowship in a dedicated trauma, acute care surgery or critical care fellowship. Applicant must have completed his/her graduate medical education before the award period begins.
  3. Applicant must be an American or Canadian citizen or permanent resident and demonstrate a commitment and opportunity for an academic career in the field of trauma in the United States or Canada.
  4. Applicant must have completed his/her graduate medical education before the award period begins.
  5. The EAST Foundation Trauma Research Scholarship is a career development award and is meant to support young investigators who have not been funded by the National Institutes of Health (other than through a national Research Service Award). This funding will support the salary and the direct costs of research of the young investigator (indirect costs are not covered). If an investigator has received such federal funding, or has received a similar type career development award from another organization such as the American College of Surgeons; the Society for Surgery for the Alimentary Tract, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Association of Academic Surgery or the Society of University Surgeons, they will be ineligible for the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma Scholarship.
  6. This proposal may be submitted to other funding sources for support.  Submission for support elsewhere will not affect the evaluation of the proposal; however, in the event that more than one award is offered, the investigator will be required to accept only one source of funding.
  7. EAST membership is NOT required for application.  The applicant must identify a mentor to provide academic and scientific leadership.  The mentor is not required to be an active or senior member of EAST but must have an expertise in the area of research.  If both applicant and mentor are not members of EAST, a sponsor must be identified who is an active EAST member.  Letters of recommendation must be submitted by the application deadline.
  8. The scholarship year is July 1 - June 30.  Applicant must agree to provide a written report on the funded project and a financial reconciliation due six months after the conclusion of the scholarship.  Any unexpended funds from the scholarship are to be reimbursed back to the EAST Foundation
  9. It is anticipated that the recipient will be present to receive the award at the EAST Annual Scientific Assemby to be held January 12-16, 2016 at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa in San Antonio, Texas.
  10. The recipient is expected to present a summary of his/her work supported through the award at the business meeting of the EAST Annual Scientific Assembly to be held January 10-14, 2017 at the Diplomat Resort in Hollywood, Florida.

  2. Funds must be used for direct support of the awardee, but otherwise unrestricted
  3. No indirect costs are payable to the institution
