The Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST)/ Wyeth Laboratories Trauma Research Scholarship is a research scholarship initially offered May 1, 2001.  The amount of each award is $40,000 annually.  The 2009 scholarship deadline for receipt of applications and research proposals, as well as statements of support and facilities from sponsors of potential scholars is September 30, 2008.  Following receipt of the applications, the Scholarship Committee will judge the applicants on the basis of the merit of their research proposals, the potential of the applicant of future contributions to the science and practice of the surgery of trauma, and the applicant’s mentor support and dedication of the research proposal.  The Scholarship Committee of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma will make assessments, evaluations, and judgments as to the finalists and the final awardee.  The announcement of the winner will be made, following the review process, at the annual meeting in January 2009. The period of the award is for one (1) year.

TRAUMA RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

1. The intent of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST)/Wyeth Laboratories Trauma Research Scholarship is basic or applied trauma related research project of sufficient substance to have potential for further funding sources as initial studies are produced and published. (e.g. basic science, clinical, epidemiology, injury prevention)

2. Applicant must be 40 years of age or younger. Eligible applicants include surgical specialties or fellows in training, surgeons with eligibility for examination by a surgical specialty board under the aegis of ACGME or Board Certified surgeons.

3. Applicant must be an American or Canadian citizen or permanent resident and demonstrate a commitment and opportunity for an academic career in the field of trauma in the United States or Canada.

4. The EAST/Wyeth Laboratories Trauma Research Scholarship is a career development award and is meant to support young investigators who have not been funded by the National Institutes of Health (other than through a national Research Service Award). This funding will support the salary and the direct costs of research of the young investigator. If an investigator has received such federal funding, or has received a similar type career development award from another organization such as the American College of Surgeons; the Society for Surgery for the Alimentary Tract, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Association of Academic Surgery or the Society of University Surgeons, they will be ineligible for the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma Scholarship. All funded support shall be listed.

5. This proposal may be submitted to other funding sources for support, but this must be acknowledged on the application form. Submission for support elsewhere will not affect the evaluation of the proposal; however, in the event that more than one award is offered, the investigator will be required to accept only on source of funding.

6. The applicant must identify a mentor to provide academic and scientific leadership. The mentor must be an active or senior member of EAST.

7. Applicant must agree to provide a written report on the funded project at the end of the year.

8. It is anticipated that the recipient will be present to receive the award at the annual meeting in January, 2009.

9. The recipient is expected to present a summary of his/her work supported through the award at the business meeting of the annual meeting in January 2010.

10. Applicant must agree to acknowledge support by the EAST/Wyeth Laboratories Trauma Research Scholarship and EAST in publication(s) arising from the supported research.

11. Deadline for receipt of the application by the Chairperson, Scholarship Committee is September 30, 2008 for the award announcement at the January 2009 annual meeting and funding to commence July 1, 2009.

12. Terms:

  • Award is made to the institution only.

  • Funds must be used for direct support of the awardee, but are otherwise unrestricted.

  • No indirect costs are payable to the institution.

  • Complete accounting must be provided to the grantor on demand and at the conclusion of the award period.

  • Unexpended funds must be returned to the grantor no later than 90 days following the end of the award period.
