Surgical Critical Care Fellowship: Learning to care for critically ill patients is a lengthy process based on didactic activities and direct patient care. Care of the critically ill begins at bedside and involves basic surgical knowledge as well as advanced knowledge of monitoring and hemodynamic support and technical skill in the performance of bedside procedures. The critical care fellow is responsible for the daily operation of a busy surgical intensive care unit service and shares in the administrative responsibilities of the Intensive Care Unit Director. Adequate resident coverage is provided for the ICU service with senior level general surgery residents and trauma faculty in house 24/7. No in house "call" is required for the fellow.

The education goals and objectives are in accordance with the core competencies of the American Board of Surgery. Evaluation of these learning objectives and specific outcomes measurements are done in a 360 degree fashion by students, residents, faculty and other health care providers. Feedback is given to the critical care fellow in a semi-annual faculty meeting which also provides the fellow with the opportunity to discuss any issues which may improve the educational experience and daily operations of the service. Academic success as measured by passing the certification examination from the American Board of Surgery has been 100% on the first attempt in the last 10 years.

Weekly Surgical Grand Rounds, M and M conference, and trauma conference are supplemented by a weekly critical care conference and monthly journal club. 2 months of elective rotation are available to the fellow and opportunities include rotations in the burn, pediatric, medical, cardiology, or anesthesia ICU services. Clinical research studies are ongoing in the ICU and the fellow assists the clinical research coordinators in the conduct of these studies. Opportunity is also given to attend one national meeting during the course of the fellowship.
