The philosphy of the ACGME approved surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville is designed to produce trauma surgeons with the training necessary to enter the field of academic trauma surgery. Ten months of the year are dedicated to rotations on the Surgical Critical Care service and is devoted to advanced educational and clinical activities related to the care of critically ill patents. Two elective months are available. The University of Tennessee Medical Center is a 602 bed tertiary care center that serves East Tennessee, Southeastern Kentucky, and portions of Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia through its hospital-based aeromedical service. This service flies four helicopters and transports an average of 150 patients per month. Over 50 percent of these patients are trauma patients.

The Trauma Service admits over 3900 trauma patients a year with the majority of them being severely injured blunt trauma patients. Despite the predominantly blunt population seen, general surgical intervention is frequently required because of the magnitude of the trauma involved. Approximately 40 percent of the patients require intensive care stay. Excellent support services are available to help care for the patients. An Acute Care surgery fellowship is under development as well.

The Surgical Critical Care Fellow will have exposure to the whole range of care of the trauma patient, including pre-hospital care, emergency and acute operative care, critical care, and post-operative care with emphasis on rehabilitation. The fellow will also be exposed to the administrative responsibilities necessary for academic trauma surgery. Research is expected and encouraged.
