Overview: The Division of Acute Care Surgery at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine is seeking a talented acute care surgeon to join our contemporary practice. Our University City: The University of Kentucky is the flagship university and healthcare center in Kentucky. Lexington is in the heart of the Bluegrass and rightfully is called the Horse Capital of the World. It is surrounded by beautiful landscape and lovely horse farms. The University plays a major role in commerce and cultural enhancement. It is a little over an hour drive from Louisville and Cincinnati and is a vibrant city with many cultural and recreational opportunities all year round. It has a high-quality school system and is a wonderful place to raise a family.
Clinical Practice: UK Healthcare has been ranked Kentucky’s #1 Hospital by U.S. News and World Report for 5 years in a row. Our adult level I trauma center evaluates 3500 patients and admits an additional 2000 EGS patients annually. The group also performs over 500 elective surgical cases annually including complex abdominal wall reconstruction and elective practice is at the discretion of each faculty member. The successful candidate will join a thriving and expanding division of 9 faculty and 11 APP’s. The Section of Acute Care Surgery’s clinical footprint comprises 6 teams, staffed daily by 3 Chief Residents, 1 or 2 Surgical Critical Care Fellows, 4 Junior Residents, 7 Interns and 4 APP’s. The referral area is a 100-mile radius and a population of over 1,200,000 that includes a large rural and mountainous Appalachian expanse outside Lexington’s Metropolitan area (350,000). Two Surgical Critical Care Fellows, eight general surgery residents per year and medical students, PA students and nursing students make the Acute Care Surgery Service an active and rich educational environment.
Distribution of Effort: The ideal new recruit will bring a basic or outcomes research interest and track record. Collaborators abound within the Division, the Department of Surgery, the UK College of Medicine and the adjoining main campus. UK is an NIH Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences and an NCI-designated Cancer Center. Protected time for research will be available to the right candidate with proven research experience plus additional administrative time. Call will be one weeknight every other week plus 4 Sundays per year, with no 24-hour calls.
