Director of Research, Trauma/Acute Care Surgery (ACS) Research and Academic Development

Summary: The Director of Research, Trauma/Acute Care Surgery (ACS) Research and Academic Development shall conduct, coordinate and/or supervise, as appropriate, all research efforts and academic program activities for the Trauma/ACS Service.

Full Time Position: Reports to the Director of Trauma GME and Research, and to the Trauma Medical Director

Mission: The person filling this position will be responsible for administrative coordination and oversight of all trauma/ACS research and related academic activities, supervision and management of the full-time research team staff members, and oversight and support of all assigned trauma/ACS research fellows or other trainees in close coordination with the Director of Trauma GME and Research. This effort will focus on the primary mission of designing and executing high-quality and impactful research and other academic productivity, and to meet and exceed the research requirements and standards established for Level 1 trauma centers by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma

Core responsibilities include:

(1) Trauma/ACS Research
• Conduct trauma/ACS related research either as a member of a team or independently
o Develop and prepare research protocols
o Work with sponsors, Principal Investigators, and Scripps Institutional Review Board (IRB) to coordinate activities for protocol approval and implementation and to assure that appropriate regulatory documentation is completed
o Collaborate with other institutions in trauma/ACS research
o Acquire patient consent to be a subject in research
o Collect subject data from the trauma patient registry and other hospital records
o Oversee all data collection and management efforts within the program
o Maintain study documents in accordance with Good Clinical Practice standards and all applicable laws and regulations
• Contribute to the production or, where appropriate, individual production of conference and seminar papers, presentations, and publications from research
• Contribute to the preparation or, where appropriate, individual preparation of research proposal submissions to external funding bodies
• Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise
• Administrative functions, including IRB submissions, primarily connected with the area of research
• Co-supervision or, where appropriate, direct supervision of trainee/fellow research projects
• Supervision and administrative oversight of Trauma Research staff members, including annual performance evaluations, schedule and vacation approval, and computer and data access
• Attendance at meetings associated with research or the work of the trauma service and at departmental level and/or membership on any related or relevant committees
• Supervise and administer internal and external research grant applications, awards, and required reporting
• Assist in preparation of County/State and American College of Surgeons reviews and verifications, primarily connected with the area of research and related scholarly activities.
• Supervise and perform scheduled intermittent reviews of available trauma/ACS multi-center trials and make recommendations regarding their suitability for participation
• Supervise and assist with all aspects of abstract and manuscript preparation and submission for presentation at local/national meetings and publication in peer-reviewed journals
• Interface with legal department, hospital administration, and other departments for data use agreements, grant management and administration, and other requirements in support of the trauma research program

(2) Additional responsibilities
• Participate in the trauma quality improvement committee and provide assistance and support in the monthly trauma morbidity and mortality review conferences in coordination with the Trauma Medical Director.
• Provide assistance and support in the development and delivery of major trauma medical conferences, including a yearly in-house Scripps trauma/ACS research seminar
• Develop and review educational curriculum for the research team members and assigned research trainees/fellows
• Provide assistance and support in the preparation of County/State and American College of Surgeons reviews and verifications in diverse areas beyond research and academics, as needed


• Completion of a Doctoral degree in a health-related field, leadership, education, or law
• Familiarity and experience with advanced statistics and research design
• Strong background in medical or health-related research
• Experience in medical informatics, data visualization, working with large datasets
• Evidence of publications in peer-reviewed medical or health-related journals
• Experience working with IRB and knowledge of good research practices and all other research-related laws and policies for clinical research
• Minimum 5 years clinical and/or research experience in ICU/Trauma/Emergency or equivalent area of hospital/clinical care
• Demonstrated experience and commitment to teaching and mentoring/advising students/trainees
• Public speaking and presentation experience and expertise
• Managerial experience with leading and supervising diverse groups or teams, including job-performance evaluations and counseling
• Managerial experience in coordinating research projects including multidisciplinary and multi-center studies
• Experience in undertaking extensive literature reviews and critically appraising literature
• Experience in both journalistic and medical research writing
• High level organizational skill: the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, initiate and follow-up actions, all with minimal or no supervision
• Demonstrated capacity to work in a collegial manner with staff, clinicians, and all research team members
• High level of familiarity with computers, including experience using MS Word, Excel, email and the internet
