The mission of the Division of Acute Care Surgical Services in the Department of Surgery is the advancement of science through research and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the graduate and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Division provides junior faculty with clinical and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. The Division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal
This position is a junior to mid level, term, non-tenure track faculty position in the area of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Acute General Surgery. The faculty member should have clinical interests that complement and expand existing expertise in the Division and community care. Research areas of particular interest include (but are not limited to) investigation of existing practice management guidelines and their effect on outcomes, Modification of existing PMG based on evidence as well as laboratory research. The faculty member will also support the division with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Position Responsibilities

Teaching
Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in all areas of Trauma, Critical Care, Emergency General Surgery and applied anatomy and physiology.
Research

Faculty member must establish a nationally recognized research program with a record of publication in refereed journals and external funding. They are expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program in at VCU. In addition, they will mentor both undergraduate and graduate students in their research laboratory.
Service

Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc. Their clinical responsibilities may be extended to a shared time between VCU and VA Medical Centers.
Clinical

Faculty member clinical responsibility will be in the care of the trauma and acute care patients on the MCV campus of VCU, the community sites, and any other facilities in the VCU Network. He/she will be responsible for the development of an active surgical practice, with the support of the Division and Department’s leadership.
Other (for instance administrative duties, etc.)

Required Qualifications
Board Certification or Eligibility in General Surgery.
Fellowship in Trauma or Surgical Critical Care
Commitment to laboratory and/or Clinical Research.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications
Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level.
Record of external funding or proposal submissions to obtain funding.
