The Spirit of Charity Trauma Center (located in University Hospital, formerly known as Charity Hospital) is the only Level 1 trauma center in the metro New Orleans area and also serves as the tertiary trauma referral hospital for south Louisiana and portions of the Gulf Coast. The surgical critical fellows gain extensive experience in the management of penetrating trauma and acute care surgery (we have a 60% penetrating trauma rate).
The surgical critical fellows are responsible for managing all patients in the trauma/surgical ICU, which admits a combination of trauma, general surgery, vascular, oncology, and surgical subspeciality patients. They direct resuscitations, take weekly trauma call, lead an ICU team of residents and medical students, and work closely with the trauma/critical care staff in administrative, research, and educational endeavors.
The fellows have a unique opportunity to work with surgical faculty from two medical schools. Faculty members from both the LSU and Tulane departments of surgery enjoy an excellent rapport and work in close collaboration to cover trauma call, round in the ICU, and conduct research. The fellowship consists of 9 months in the SICU, 2 months of electives, and a month of vacation. Elective rotations are available, but not limited to, the PICU, MICU, anesthesia, and burn unit. Weekly critical care conferences are held and the fellows are expected to prepare four lectures during the year for this conference, as well as a department grand rounds presentation. They also lead the weekly ICU multidisciplinary rounds and attend the weekly trauma peer-review conference. Broad opportunities are available for clinical research. The fellows have all done very well academically and have a 100% first time pass rate on the Surgical Critical Boards. The fellowship is ACGME approved for a 5-year cycle. Interested applicants should send a C.V. to the address below and apply through the match.
