RESIDENCY PROGRAM DIRECTOR - ACUTE CARE SURGEON

The Department of Surgery at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School is seeking an accomplished Acute Care Surgeon for the position of Program Director for the Surgical Residency. The residency program of the Department of Surgery at the New Jersey Medical School is the oldest and most accomplished surgical residency in the state with a long history of excellence in education. It also has a long-standing reputation for diversity and inclusion in its trainees and faculty. In 2019, programmatic changes within the Rutgers academic health system led to the residency successfully merging with the surgical residency at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. This fully accredited expanded program had an outstanding inaugural match in the 2020-21 year with an even more successful recruit class over the past academic cycle. The current program graduates ten (10) categorical chief residents. The educational experience is well rounded and varied as surgical residents rotate though University Hospital, St. Barnabas Medical Center, The East Orange VA Hospital, Newark Beth Medical Center and Jersey City Medical Center. Other residencies within the department include plastic and urologic surgery. There are fellowships in vascular surgery and trauma and surgical critical care. The trauma fellowship received approval to expand one of its positions to an AAST Acute Care surgical fellowship beginning in the 2021-22 academic year.

Qualifications: Candidates should be board certified in general surgery with added qualifications in surgical critical care and eligible for a NJ License. Experience as a program director or associate program director is strongly desired. A commitment to and track record in surgical education along with a history of leadership with a demonstration of strong managerial skills are essential. Research and educational scholarship is necessary.

Academic rank and compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, but successful applicants will likely be at the level of Associate Professor or higher. In addition to leading the surgical residency, one-half of the candidate’s FTE will be providing clinical care on the trauma, surgical critical care and acute care surgical services.
