Trauma Surgeon

This position is an open rank, term, non-tenure track faculty position in the area of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Emergency General Surgery, and Burn Surgery. Prior involvement in the various branches of the military or military partnership efforts is also preferred but not required. The faculty member should have clinical interests that complement and expand existing expertise in the Division’s clinical and academic mission. Research areas of interest include (but are not limited to): outcomes, basic science, and translational research. The faculty member will also support the division with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Position Responsibilities
1. Teaching
• Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in all areas of Trauma, Critical Care, Emergency General Surgery, and applied anatomy and physiology.
2. Research
• Faculty member must establish a nationally recognized research program with a record of publication in refereed journals and external funding. The incumbent is expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program in at VCU. In addition, this position will mentor both undergraduate and graduate students in their research laboratory.
3. Service
• Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field (e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.) The incumbent’s clinical responsibilities may be extended to a shared time between VCU and VA Medical Centers.
4. Clinical
• Faculty member clinical responsibility will be in the care of the trauma and acute care patients on the MCV campus of VCU, the community sites, and any other facilities in the VCU Network. This position will be responsible for the development of an active surgical practice with the support of the Division and Department’s leadership.

Required Qualifications
a. Board certification in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care
b. Commitment to laboratory and/or clinical research
c. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
