Approximately 500,000 ventral hernia repairs occur each year in the United States. Trauma and emergency general surgery patients have a high incidence of ventral hernia formation. There are a variety of techniques and a variety of meshes used to address these hernias. We would like to compare open versus minimally invasive, including the types of techniques; The use of meshes versus no mesh, including the type of mesh; and evaluate outcomes.
Another area of growing interest is the optimal management and techniques for abdominal closure in patients managed with an open abdomen. Is there a role for prophylactic mesh placement or early myofascial advancement techniques?
