Type: New Practice Management Guideline (PMG)
Category: Surgical Critical Care
Committee Liaison: Kaushik Mukherjee, MD, MSCI, FACS

Team leader(s)

Statement:
Frostbite is a cold injury that is associated with high morbidity, long-term disability and high health care costs. Despite the complexity of this population, diagnostic and treatment practices lack standardization. The treatment of frostbite has traditionally been conservative with expectant management utilizing amputation when necessary. In the past two decades; advanced diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic modalities have gained widespread use with impressive clinical outcomes. However, institutional protocols are highly variable, as there are no large scale, multi-center trials evaluating these novel modalities and associated outcomes.
