Splenic Function and Need for Vaccination After Angio-Embolization2019

Type: Update Practice Management Guideline (PMG)
Existing PMG/EBR: Splenic Injury, Blunt, Selective Nonoperative Management of
Category: Trauma
Committee Liaison: Not set

Team leader(s)

With the increasing utilization of angio-embolization for the non-operative management of splenic lacerations, the need for vaccination against capsulated bacteria should be assessed due to the currently unknown percentage of splenic function after angio-embolization. Blunt splenic injury guidelines were previously published by EAST in 2012 and recognized vaccination after severe injury and/or embolization as an "Unanswered Question (#10)". Several articles have since been published that should be analyzed to determine if a guideline can be developed.
