The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center was established in 2019. It is a one-year fellowship approved by the ACGME and has received initial accreditation.

The fellow(s) will be exposed to a broad range of critically injured and critically ill patients under the supervision of seven board certified surgical intensivists. In addition, the fellows will gain experience in ICU administration as well as medical student and resident education. General surgery and emergency medicine residents from an ACGME complementary training program, OhioHealth Doctors Hospital rotate in the SICU at GMC on a continuous basis. Faculty coverage is available 24/7 for supervision of fellows, and didactics are also provided at this teaching site. The volume of patients would be considered high and the clinical experience extremely diverse.

Research opportunities

Research
Research is an important aspect of surgical critical care training. Fellows will be given the following opportunities to participate in scholarly activities:
-Participation in a QI project of their own design or one designed by the program or linked to the medical center's goals.
-IRB approved research projects.
-Oral or poster presentations at the OhioHealth Research Day or scientific meeting.
-Manuscript preparation of evidence based medicine systematic review of a topic.
At the beginning of the academic year, the fellows will meet with director of trauma surgical critical care research and the program director to identify areas of interest for research. The fellows will work closely with the Grant Trauma Research Team (Director of Research, biostatistician, research fellow) and OhioHealth Research Institute (OHRI). Education in feasibility assessments, protocol development, budgets/legal contracts, IRB submission, data collection and analysis and dissemination are offered. The Grant Trauma Research team and OHRI will guide the fellows through all aspects of scholarly activity, including preparation of case reports; development of QI projects; and development, approval and management of human subject research. Research expectations for all fellows is to complete at least one quality improvement project suitable for peer review while in the program. The project must be presented at a local, regional or national meeting or submitted for publication. Fellows will collaborate with a faculty member who is actively and simultaneously engaged in the project. The fellows and faculty research director will meet often to ensure successful completion of the project. The fellows' progress will be gauged during the semiannual review and reported to the Clinical Competency Committee. Fellows who do not complete the research requirement will receive an academic report of deficiency under Practice-based Learning and Improvement.
