Harlem Hospital Center has an opportunity for a surgeon to join its busy Trauma, Acute and Critical Care service. Successful candidates will be Board Certified/Eligible in Surgical Critical Care, or be experienced, Board Certified/Eligible General Surgeons who are interested in continuing their practice of trauma.

The service will have a goal of posting six Surgeons on the trauma roster. The on-call physician covers acute care and trauma surgery, receives hourly reimbursement in addition to a base salary, resides in-house for the call, and is supported by a team of residents, physician assistants and a back-up trauma surgeon from home. Specialists in Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Interventional Radiology, Vascular Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, ENT, Oromaxillofacial Surgery, Ophthalmology and Bariatrics are available to come in within an hour of calling. Candidates with critical care training can practice in the SICU and BICU. There are opportunities for elective general surgery and endoscopy through very active hospital-based clinics. Co-appointment to the faculty of Columbia University is available at an appropriate rank. Duties include teaching and supervision of Medical Students and Surgical Residents.

Harlem Hospital has a rich and storied tradition of service to its community, seeing 300,000 patients a year, providing over 300 inpatient beds, 20 adult critical care beds, 6 OR’s, and 4 endoscopy suites. It is an ACS verified, level II trauma center with four adult trauma bays, two pediatric trauma bays, two 64-slice CT scanners, an interventional radiology suite and a combined OR/Interventional radiology room. There were 1,100 trauma contacts in 2018 with 700 admissions to the hospital. Twenty-two percent were penetrating traumas and 5% were burns. In addition to a highly respected clinical service, Harlem maintains an active injury prevention and community outreach program.
