This past summer saw both the best and the worst of humanity with the events in Orlando and Dallas, as well as the ever- escalat- ing interpersonal violence that continues to haunt our neighborhoods. In each arena EAST members have been called upon to help the injured and have been there to support our colleagues and our communities. The cost to our collective soul is great and we are at a precipice. We cannot continue to accept these events as just another tragedy to weather; things need to change. As an organization, EAST has a responsibility to help lead this change. EAST’s Injury Control and Violence Prevention Section under the leadership of Alex Eastman is at the forefront of many of our organization’s outreach efforts. The Guide- lines Section under the direction of Bryce Robinson is taking on the challenge of establishing practice management guidelines and devel- oping evidence-based reviews focusing on prevention and interperson- al violence. Each and every one of us can be a spark that helps light the lamp of change. That lamp, once lit, has to continue to be provided with fuel from our community to effect and sustain meaningful change. The task is daunting, but in the words of Arthur Ashe – Start where you are, use what you have and do what you can. Summer also brought us the Institute of Medicine report - A National Trauma Care System: Integrating Military and Civilian Trauma Systems to Achieve Zero Preventable Deaths After Injury. This was created by the Committee on Military Trauma Care’s Learning Health System and Its Translation to the Civilian Sector lead by a multi-institutional group including past EAST presidents and board members. The report pres- ents a vision for a national trauma care system driven by the clear and bold aim of zero preventable deaths after injury and minimal trauma-re- lated disability, to benefit those the nation sends into harm’s way in Message from the President 2016 ISSUE THREE Nicole A.
