In 1973, Leigh Van Valen described a new law of evolution, which he de- scribed as the “Red Queen Hypothesis.” The theory was derived from a line in Lewis Carroll’s “Through the Looking Glass”, in which the Red Queen says to Alice, “My dear, here we must run as fast as we can, just to stay in place.” Van Valen proposed that a species must act the same way that the Red Queen does, continuously running to evolve, so that they may keep up with the other, competitive species. I have been very fortunate to have a unique vantage from which to view the ideas and productivity of EAST, where your Committees and Divisions have been spending the year “running” to keep up with practices of the young trauma surgeon. The Division of Professional Development has been hard at work to develop the concept of an online education “academy” at EAST. The Social Media Management Committee and our EAST office staff have been exploring unique strategies and offerings in the social media “space,” in an effort to make EAST’s social media offerings the best amongst academic surgical societies. I would challenge you to find an offering as unique as EAST’s INVEST-C Hackathon, brought to you by the Division of Research. These are just a few examples of members hard at work, serving the Mission and Vision Statements of EAST. I would advocate, however, that it is the second sentence of the Red Queen’s famous statement that is the most pertinent to our organi- zation. In its entirety, the quote reads, “My dear, here we must run as fast as we can, just to stay in place. And if you wish to go anywhere you must run twice as fast as that.” EAST is running……twice as fast. Watch us evolve. With respect, Bruce A. Crookes, MD, FACS EAST President Leadership. Development.
