EAST news | 2018 Issue 1 6 EAST Multicenter Trials Committee The Multicenter Trials Committee (MCT) of the EAST Research Division has been assisting the currently approved EAST- sponsored multicenter trials from 2015 onwards. Seven studies have already been completed and presented and/or published their work. The MCT Committee stays in contact with the study PIs regularly to assist with any advertising or mentorship needed for individual studies. Information regarding the EAST Multicenter Trials can be found here. Our annual 2019 call to lead an EAST Multicenter Trial will open in May, the submission deadline will be October 1, 2018. Highlighted EAST MCTs: Interested in participating? Drs. Babak Sarani and Lisbi Rivas of George Washington University are conducting the EAST- approved MCT The Incidence of VTE in Trauma Patients after TXA administration: A Multicenter Retrospective Study. This is a review of patients who received TXA within three hours from injury, with the primary aim to determine the rate of VTE events controlling for known risk factors for VTE. As of now nine centers have agreed to participate, however they are hoping to recruit more centers! Also, Dr. Haytham Kaafarani of Massachusetts General Hospital is conducting the EAST-approved MCT The Emergency Surgery Score (ESS): A Prospective Multicenter Validation of ESS as a Tool to Predict Postoperative Mortality and Complications after Emergency General Surgery. The Emergency Surgery Score (ESS) is currently suggested as the EGS equivalent of the trauma Injury Severity Score (ISS). ESS is a user-friendly but comprehensive calculator that accurately predicted postoperative death after EGS in the validation study. The MCT will include only the patients who undergo an emergency laparotomy, and simply requires the collection of the 22 demographic, comorbidity, and laboratory variables needed to calculate ESS, as well as 30- day mortality and morbidity (20 well-defined complications). Additional details regarding both studies can be found here. To complete a Center Sign-Up form to participate in the studies above or any additional EAST MCTs, please click here. The call for Letters of Intent (LOI’s) to apply for the 2019 EAST Multicenter Trial Junior Investigator Award will be opening in mid-March, the LOI submission deadline for the award will be June 15, 2018. Additional information regarding the award can be found here.
