b'www.east.org 5Naturally, Dr. Morris transitioned to become the next Online Education Chair. David started utilizing teleconference systems to record Traumacasts with guests from all over the country. There were many growing pains as moderators tried just about every platform available and became expert IT assistance for our guests. As with all previous chairs, David had a quest to fill a Traumacast moderator position. In 2017, he sent an email to Dr. Carrie Valdez, Hi Carrie We are looking to add another moderator. What do you say? Interested? Interested?? Was she ever! Carrie had always known she had a face for radio. The next day Carrie made her husband pull over the car, turn off the radio and be absolutely quiet while she took a call from THE David Morris. David explained what a moderator does and asked reasonable questions like, Have you ever done a podcast? No. Do you have any experience with editing? No. Do you at least own a Mac? Umm, no (Were NOT getting a Mac, whispered her die-hard PC husband.) David thought Carrie sounded ready for the job and reassured her anyone can learn how to do this. And they can.Over the next couple of years Matt, David and Carrie continued to produce traditional clinical podcasts and increased non-clinical topics. Crossover episodes with the EAST Careercast and other societies were created. Social issues were discussed. Industry supported with generous grants. Carrie stepped up in her role as a moderator by dashing around the EAST Assemblies pulling unsuspecting guests into stairwells for interviews to create meeting compilations. These Traumacasts are her favorites. She receives emails from EAST members deployed abroad expressing gratitude that they can listen and feel like they were at the meeting.Dr. Valdez took over as the Online Education Chair in January 2020 and started to develop future moderators by inviting members of the committee on as guest moderators. Just as the committee chairs before her, she took on novice moderators, mentored them and gave them the opportunity to interview giants in the trauma and acute care surgery world. These volunteers breathed new life into the Traumacast. Though it started as just a man and a mic, interest and production required additional coordination of volunteers. The Traumacast Workgroup was developed with Dr. Lauren Dudas at the helm in 2021. With more than 30 volunteers, the Online Education Committee now produces monthly Traumacasts. Once again, there is unbridled enthusiasm for Traumacast!147 podcasts and countless guests and listeners later, we now celebrate a decade of the EAST Traumacast. To hear the story from the moderators themselves, look for the Traumacast Anniversary edition to be produced and published later this year.'
