We are consistently growing our following on Twitter and Facebook and try to share EAST updates and news on these platforms consistently. @EASTICVP This new Twitter page launched to serve as a public informational tool. Born out of the Injury Control and Violence Prevention Section, this new social media platform is meant to engage the public and serve as a source for tips, news or key prevention strategies. Twitter Journal Club (@EASTjournalclub) A highlight from last year, this continues to expand and create ardent discussion each and every time. EAST moderators join authors of current articles of interest to EAST members for an informal discussion on Twitter of the articles’ specifics and of related topics. These “Twitter chats” are open to the public, allow authors to discuss their advances with an interesting and diverse audience, and increase understanding and awareness of current studies among trauma and acute care surgeons and other healthcare providers. To prepare for the next #EASTjc chat, follow @EASTjournalclub on Twitter. We have added recaps for those who were unable to follow the discussion. These ‘Storify’ stories are a quick way to allow others to catch up on past discussions and are available on the EAST Website. EAST has been busy... 2016 Year in Review Donor Stories Kevin M. Schuster, MD, MPH, FACS, FCCM Yale School of Medicine EAST is the one and only organization dedicated to the professional development of the young trauma surgeon. In the decade that I have been a member of EAST, I have seen early career scientists present papers at the Annual Scientific Assembly, achieve research funding through EAST, and use this to establish focused research agendas competitive for National Institutes of Health or similar funding. These surgeon scientists are advancing the care of the acutely ill or injured surgical patient. Similarly, enthusiastic young surgeons have brought forward innovative ideas and developed them into EAST’s key program offerings. Only in an organization like EAST can such original ideas be advanced by young surgeons. Without EAST, these surgeons would have few venues for their research and ideas. Through many of EAST’s programs, fellows-in-training and young surgeons can broaden the skills necessary to become successful surgical investigators or achieve leadership positions in their programs. For all of these reasons and more, I have given and continue to give to EAST. I choose to give back to the organization that has provided so many opportunities for me. So many people are inspired to give to EAST. These are just a few. In this series, we will highlight a few EAST donors – why they give. It is stories and people like this that help the continued advancement of EAST.
