EAST news 2015 Issue 310 Norman E. McSwain Jr. MD FACS a member of the Found- ing Board of Directors for EAST died July 28 2015 following a stroke. Born in 1937 in Albert- ville AL he attended the Univer- sity of the South in Sewanee TN and subsequently matriculated at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Following an internship at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine Winston-Sa- lem NC he joined the Air Force. He completed his surgical train- ing at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta Emory University. His initial surgical practice was with Dr. Harrison Rogers who later served as President of the AMA in Atlanta. In 1973 he accepted a position at the University of Kansas School of Medicine as an Associate Professor. Norman was recruited to Tulane Univer- sity School of Medicine in 1977 where he would remain until his death. Over the years Norman held many key roles in New Orleans. In the Department of Surgery at Tulane his positions included the Section Chief of Trauma Surgical Critical Care Program Director of the Surgery residency and Vice Chairman. He was the Trauma Medical Director TMD of Charity Hospital during Hurri- cane Katrina and later served as the TMD of the Spirit of Charity Trauma Center. He was the long time Medical Director of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and served as the Police Surgeon for the City of New Or- leans for more than 40 years. Norman was a luminary in the field of Trauma Surgery. His academic career was prolific and included co-authoring 37 books more than 400 journal articles 116 book chapters and deliver- ing more than 900 professional presentations. He chaired the Louisiana Committee on Trauma for many years and served on the national Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons ACS-COT for two terms including chairing the Emergency Services- Prehos- pital now EMS Subcommittee of the ACS-COT. Norman is the only individual in the history of the ACS-COT to have received all five of its trauma awards and honors ATLS Meritorious Service Award National Safety Councils Surgeons Award for Service to Safety Millennium Commitment Award Meritorious Achievement Award for State Provincial Chairs and Scudder Orator. Norman was involved with the founding of EAST. He and four others joined the four Founding Members Drs. Howard Cham- pion Burton Harris Lenworth Jacobs and Kimball Maull at the kick off meeting of EAST in October 1986 in New Orleans. Norman was a Founding Board Member of EAST and supported the by-laws even though it would mean he could never serve as President of the organization he turned 50 thus automatically becoming a Senior member in February of 1987. Since its inception Norman attended virtually every EAST Annual Sci- entific Assembly. His colleagues would see him in his typical attire of a leather sport coat turtleneck shirt so he didnt have to wear a tie and a bear claw necklace made by a Native American artisan. While in Georgia Norman be- came the Medical Director for the race track at Road Atlanta. This experience piqued his inter- est in the emergency medicine and prehospital trauma care.
