In Memoriam Carl Valenziano MD MPA FACS 1951-2015 www.east.org 11 Dr. Carl Valenziano passed away on August 24 2015. Dr. Valenziano had been a member of EAST from the beginning joining in 1988. He served on the EAST Board of Directors from 2010-2013 and chaired the EAST Seniors Section formerly Seniors Committee during that same time. He was an avid photographer and often served as the EAST Photographer during the EAST Annual Scientific Assembly. He will be missed. Kansas Paramedic Program and was a leader in the development of the Emergency Medical Ser- vices EMS system in that State. Of all his many contributions Norman was most proud of his role in developing and serving as Medical Director for the Prehospital Trauma Life Support PHTLS program of the National Association of EMTs NAEMT. Based on ATLS PHTLS is a two-day continuing education course for EMS personnel focused on the prehospital care of the trauma patient. PHTLS has been promulgated to more than 64 countries and more than one million students have completed the course. While many saw EMS personnel as those who should be taught in a cookbook fashion Norman always believed that if taught the underlying basic principles they COULD make appropriate clini- cal decisions. This resulted in a key PHTLS conceptteaching principles not specific practice. Over the years Norman could have become quite wealthy from the royalties from the sales of the PHTLS textbook now in its 8th edition and translated to more than a dozen languages. Instead he insisted that the all royalties be paid to NAEMT the professional organization for those on the frontline of EMS. This funding supported NAEMT through lean times. Normans focus was never on fame or wealthit was a dedication to the injured patient and those who provided the initial care. Normans life has been the story of selfless service service to his Country service to the trauma and surgical community service to his community including the New Orleans Police Department service to prehospital care pro- viders worldwide and most of all service to those patients for whom he cared. Jeffrey Salomone completed his Surgery residency and Critical Care fellowship under Dr. Mc Swains tenure as Pro- gram Director at Tulane and served as an Associate Medical Director for PHTLS.
