Second-Year Acute Care Surgery Fellowship Opportunity
The Cook County Department of Surgery, in partnership with the University of Illinois College of Medicine and OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, is pleased to offer a unique second-year training experience for fellows seeking a career in Acute Care Surgery.
This highly customizable non-ACGME accredited fellowship allows trainees to design an individualized curriculum that reflects their anticipated career goals and ideal future practice. Fellows may tailor their educational experience by selecting the desired balance of mentorship and clinical exposure in Trauma Surgery, Burn Surgery, Acute Care Surgery, Elective General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care.
Fellows with a particular interest in burn care will have the opportunity to earn a Burn Surgery Certificate. Additional compensated call opportunities are available for those seeking expanded clinical experience.
Recognizing the importance of leadership development, the program also provides structured education in healthcare administration and systems-based practice, including clinical documentation improvement, professional billing, utilization management, quality improvement, patient safety, and strategies for optimizing hospital performance metrics, including Vizient and Leapfrog rankings.
OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center Rockford is a high-volume Level I Trauma Center and the region’s only Level I Burn Center, serving patients across more than ten counties in Northern and Central Illinois as well as Southern Wisconsin. Fellows will gain extensive experience managing a high volume of operative trauma cases and complex emergency general surgery patients. Additional opportunities are available in robotic surgery, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, and thoracic surgery.
Comprehensive didactic education is integrated throughout all rotations, and fellows are encouraged to participate in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and scholarly activities.
This fellowship is intended for surgeons who feel confident in their foundational training and are seeking a transition-to-practice experience before entering independent practice. Fellows are treated as junior attending surgeons, assuming a high degree of autonomy and responsibility in operative management, clinical decision-making, and patient care while benefiting from individualized mentorship and faculty support. The program is designed to foster the clinical judgment, leadership abilities, and administrative expertise necessary for success in modern Acute Care Surgery practice.
