The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and Regional One Health (ROH) are located in Memphis, TN, and ROH is the only level 1 trauma center in a 150-mile radius. ROH evaluates ~13,000 trauma patients per year with ~6,000 admissions. ~ 30% of our patients are from a penetrating mechanism, and we perform ~400 trauma laparotomies (index cases) per year.
UTHSC offers 3 positions for a 2-year SCC/ACS Fellowship and 1 position for a 1-year SCC Fellowship. The first year is similar for both tracks, in which the fellow has responsibilities in the trauma intensive care unit (TICU), Surgical ICU, or Burn ICU at ROH. First-year fellows take trauma call one to two times per week. Responsibilities include assisting with the care of critically ill and injured ICU patients, assisting surgical residents in the operating room, and participating in resuscitations in the trauma admitting area. The Elvis Presley Trauma Center at ROH is a self-contained unit with a dedicated nursing staff separate from the hospital’s emergency room. There are four trauma operating rooms in the trauma center that are dedicated to trauma/emergency surgery. Immediately adjacent to the trauma operating rooms is the 22-bed TICU. The fellows are responsible for organizing the weekly trauma conference and are expected to participate in a research or quality project. There are multiple opportunities for didactic learning, including a monthly multidisciplinary trauma meeting, a weekly trauma conference, a weekly trauma morbidity and mortality conference, AAST didactics, and multidisciplinary critical care conferences. Elective opportunities include: pediatric trauma/ICU at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, neurocritical care, cardiovascular critical care, palliative care, ultrasound, and prehospital.
The second year of the fellowship is accredited by the AAST. This year allows the fellow to function as a junior attending (with protected academic time) to further develop clinical skills and gain further operative, administrative, and research experience in preparation for a career as an academic surgeon. During that year, the fellow may complete research projects initiated in the first year of the fellowship. The fellow will also participate in rotations in Emergency general surgery, vascular surgery, and procurements/HPB. The fellow will have additional time for electives if desired. Fellows perform approximately 400 cases per year.
