Chief of Trauma, Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery

Chief, Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery and Trauma Medical Director, University of Mississippi Medical Center.

The Department of Surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is accepting applications and nominations for the position of Chief, Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery and Trauma Medical Director. The successful applicant will lead a very busy trauma program at Mississippi’s only Level I trauma center. The trauma program encompasses adult and pediatric trauma and averages approximately 6,000 trauma admissions yearly. The Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery currently has eight full time clinical faculty, three trauma advanced practice providers, eight critical care advanced practice providers, and one full time research faculty. The division produces roughly 80,000 wRVUs yearly and performs over 1,600 operations. The division faculty participate in the education of surgical trainees in the one-year surgical critical care fellowship and the general surgery residency. UMMC medical students and select trainees from other residency programs also rotate on the trauma and surgical critical care services. Division faculty also staff the UMMC surgical ICU, a 20-bed ICU with over 1,000 admissions annually. In addition, the institution recently started a burn care program in which faculty in the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery participate.

The division chief will be appointed in the Department of Surgery at the rank of associate professor or professor, commensurate with experience. The successful candidate should have a track record of leadership in trauma and critical care surgery. Experience managing surgical groups within an academic department and institution and leadership experience within an American College of Surgeons verified trauma program is favored.

UMMC is Mississippi’s only academic medical center, Level I trauma center and transplant center. The Department of Surgery has 11 Divisions, 45 clinical faculty, four research faculty, and 35 advanced practice providers. Yearly, we perform roughly 13,500 operations at seven UMMC sites and produce roughly 420,000 wRVUs. In addition, select faculty have appointments at the Sonny Montgomery VA hospital. Our educational efforts support students from the UMMC School of Medicine and almost 70 GME learners in eight ACGME approved residency and fellowship programs within the department. We support approximately 50 more GME learners rotating from other programs and institutions within Mississippi to obtain certain experiences and exposure.

The Department of Surgery at UMMC provides patient- and family-focused, interdisciplinary, state-of-the-art comprehensive care to our patients. Our department has a long-standing commitment to diversity of residents, fellows, faculty, staff and thought. Our recruitment efforts will focus on candidates that share our commitment to inclusiveness, diversity and equity.
